Programs & Credentials

NIWE Academy offers 18+ programs and certificates including the Hairstylist Diploma, Barbering Diploma, Comprehensive Aesthetics Diploma, Clinical Aesthetics Diploma, Professional Esthetics Diploma, Advanced Nails, Apprenticeship Hairstyling, PMU, Laser Tattoo Removal, Advanced Laser Technician, and more. Programs range from 16 to 32 weeks.

Program lengths range from 16 weeks (Barbering, Clinical Aesthetics, Professional Esthetics) to 32 weeks (Hairstyling Diploma, Comprehensive Aesthetics). Certification and workshop programs are shorter. All programs include both online theory and hands-on practical training.

Yes. NIWE Academy is a provincially accredited Private Career College licensed under Alberta Advanced Education. Our programs meet TradeSecrets and AIT standards, and we are the only AIT-approved Apprenticeship Hairstyling provider in
Southern Alberta.

Yes. All diploma programs include licensing exam preparation at no additional cost. Our curriculum is aligned with TradeSecrets and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) standards to ensure you write your exam with confidence.

The Professional Esthetics Diploma (16 weeks / 560 hours) is the fastest path to employment in spa and beauty settings, including 6+ certificates. The Comprehensive Aesthetics Diploma (32 weeks / 1,140 hours) adds advanced medical aesthetic treatments and 12+ certificates, opening doors to clinical and medispa careers as well.

The Apprenticeship Hairstyling Program is a government-recognized pathway for registered AIT apprentices. NIWE Academy is the only AIT-approved provider in Southern Alberta. You can register and begin technical training without a sponsor — a sponsor is only required for your on-the-job hours.

Yes. NIWE offers an Advanced Laser Technician certification that includes laser tattoo removal training. This is one of the fastestgrowing services in the aesthetics industry, and NIWE students train on the Lutronic Hollywood Spectra — one of the highest-end laser tattoo removal machines on the market.

Most diploma programs require a high school diploma or equivalent. The Apprenticeship Program requires English 10-2 and Math 10-3 or a GED/CAEC. Contact our admissions team for program-specific requirements.

Yes. NIWE Academy welcomes international students. You must have a valid Canadian study permit to enroll in diploma programs. Our admissions team can guide you through the enrollment process and study permit requirements.

Student Experience

NIWE students train in a 10,500 sq ft facility at the CORE Shopping Centre in downtown Calgary. You'll learn theory online and practice hands-on in our professional salon and clinic, working with real clients from day one. You arrive as a student — you leave as a professional.

Yes. Every diploma program includes Open Salon or Open Clinic experience where students work with real clients under instructor supervision. This real-world training is what sets NIWE graduates apart in the job market.

The Capstone Business Development Project is included in all NIWE diploma programs. Students build a complete, bank-ready business plan including floor plan design, financial projections, marketing strategy, and Alberta compliance requirements — and present it in a mock bank interview. No other beauty school in Calgary offers this. It prepares every graduate to not just get a job, but eventually own their own business.

Depending on your program, NIWE graduates work as licensed hairstylists, barbers, spa estheticians, clinical aestheticians, laser technicians, makeup artists, lash technicians, and more. Many graduates go on to open their own salons, spas, or clinics.

Yes — and NIWE actively prepares you for it. Our Capstone Business Development Project walks every student through building a real business plan, understanding Alberta licensing requirements, and preparing for a bank interview. Most successful salon owners work in the industry for 2–3 years first to build their clientele and savings before opening their own space.

NIWE credentials are issued under Alberta Advanced Education licensing standards. If you plan to work in another province, you may need to meet that province's specific licensing requirements. Our admissions team can provide guidance based on where you plan to work.
