It’s one of the most common questions our admissions team gets: “What’s the difference between Professional Esthetics and Clinical Aesthetics — and which one should I choose?”

Both are excellent programs. But they lead to different careers, different earning potential, and different day-to-day work lives. Here’s an honest breakdown.

Professional Esthetics Diploma — The Fast Track to Employment

Duration: 16 weeks | 560 hours | Certificates included: 6+

The Professional Esthetics Diploma is designed for students who want to enter the beauty industry quickly and build a strong, well-rounded foundation. You’ll graduate with skills in manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, lash and brow artistry, body treatments, and skincare — plus 6+ included certificates.

Best for you if:

  • You want to start working in a spa, salon, or beauty studio within 4 months
  • You’re passionate about holistic beauty and client care
  • You want flexibility — estheticians work in hotels, spas, cruise lines, and more
  • You’re building toward owning your own home-based or commercial business

Average Calgary salary: $18–$28/hour

Clinical Aesthetics Diploma — The Medical Aesthetics Path

Duration: 16 weeks | 580 hours | Certificates included: Specialized medical certifications

The Clinical Aesthetics Diploma goes deeper into the science of skin. You’ll train on pharmaceutical-grade skincare lines and advanced medical equipment — the same tools used in dermatology clinics and medispas — including laser, IPL, microneedling, RF nano-fractional resurfacing, and chemical peels.

Best for you if:

  • You want to work in a medical spa, dermatology clinic, or cosmetic surgery centre
  • You’re interested in laser treatments, skin tightening, and advanced anti-aging therapies
  • You want to eventually own your own medispa or aesthetic clinic
  • You’re a nurse or healthcare professional looking to add aesthetics to your scope

Average Calgary salary: $25–$50+/hour

What About Comprehensive Aesthetics?

Can’t choose? The Comprehensive Aesthetics Diploma (32 weeks, 1,140 hours) combines both worlds — spa and clinical — into one program, with 12+ included certificates. It’s the most complete aesthetics training available in Western Canada, and it’s the program for students who want maximum career flexibility.

The One Question That Decides It

Ask yourself: “What does my ideal workday look like in two years?”

  • Facials, nails, and full-body treatments in a luxury spa setting? → Professional Esthetics
  • Laser treatments and clinical skin therapies in a medical environment? → Clinical
    Aesthetics
  • All of the above, with the option to go in any direction? → Comprehensive Aesthetics
